Camping

If you've been reading this blog for a while now, you know that I grew up camping. I've always loved camping, hiking, and spending time outdoors. And now, it's one of Andrew and my favorite things to do together.

At some point earlier this year, we decided we should try to go camping once a month for the remainder of the year. After looking over our calendar, we quickly realized with all the weddings and events we already have scheduled, that wasn't very realistic. But we still wanted to attempt to go at least 8 to 10 times in 2014.

We've already gone on one trip this year, last month when we spent the holiday weekend camping on the central coast. We had a great trip, and it made us really look forward to planning more trips throughout the year.

Over the past couple years, we've started accumulating our own camping gear thanks to hand-me-downs from my parents, gifts and a nice discount I get from a local sporting goods store through my office. However, it seems like with every trip, our wish list gets longer and longer!

We've starting mapping out our camping plans for the rest of the year, and it's looking pretty good. But I thought I'd see if any of you have favorite camping spots you recommend. Or are we the only ones out there who love to camp?

So far our list looks like this...

January: none

February: Cerro Alto, Central Coast

March: Dillon Beach

April: Mendocino

May: TBD

June: TBD

July: Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite

August: TBD

September: Samuel P. Taylor, Marin County

October: Santa Cruz

November: TBD (weather permitting)

DecemberTBD (weather permitting)

We also entered the lottery to hike Mt. Whitney. It would be a 3-day backpacking trip up Whitney Portal. We're hoping we get at least one of the spots we put in for, we find out next week! So hopefully that will make up for one of the months we don't have a trip planned yet. We put in for a variety of dates and number of people in our group, so I'm sure we'll get at least one. Hopefully we can find some friends to go with us, too!

So, do you think we're crazy?! Any camping recommendations, or locations we should visit?

  1. I love camping and I love your schedule! If you ever get a chance to go up to Washington, I recommend the Olympic National Park. It is just a beauty and you can camp there probably for a whole week without being bored! xoxo

  2. I used to love camping as a kid! I haven't been in years (besides back packing trips -- not really the same as car camping to me!). I've been to Samuel P. Taylor. I went with some girls from my high school for a little senior trip in 2005. It was fun! I also used to love Hendy Woods up in Mendocino County, Trinity Lake camping was fun too! Also, Scott's Flat in Nevada City. This year in June I'm going to Lake Siskiyou with my husband's family. I'm so excited to go camping again!

  3. This is so fun! I love camping and hiking. It is also such a fun thing for you two to do together. Can't wait to read all about your camping adventures! One day you me and Cara (if she is interested) should do a girls camping trip! Although we should probably start with a hike or something!!

  4. Sam's family grew up camping too. I'll be honest, I was really against going camping because I love a nice hotel, but when we went as a family last year, it was so much fun! Sam and I want to do a lot of beach camping this year. We should meet somewhere in the middle and go beach camping. That would be so fun!

  6. I am a big fan of #30 at Van Damn State Park in Mendocino! Beautiful campgrounds across from the ocean. #30 has a stream that runs behind it. We are headed to Mendo or Carmel this weekend. I can't wait!
